The Great Debaters
Main Actor(s)/Actresses: Denzel Washington, Denzel Whitaker, Nate Parker, and Jurnee Smollett
Memorable Supporting Cast: Forest Whitaker and Jermaine Williams
Plot: Melvin Tolson is a professor at Wiley College. He also heads up the debate team and picks a handful of students to make up his team. This all African-American debate team only loses one debate. They also face numerous racial issues of their time. They finally get the honor of debating against Harvard University the best in the United States. Will they be able to face up to the great Harvard debate team as well as the racial troubles in their lives?
Extra thoughts: I feel that the point of this film is more to educate than to entertain. Forest Whitaker did an excellent acting job. The Great Debaters takes you back to 1935 when America was in the throws of the depression and racial inequality. America has come a long way since then. It was a bit campy at times but over all it stayed some what realistic. I say see this film for a point of reference.
